Frame Labs + PICA Host XR Bootcamp

In August we teamed up with the Perth Institute fof Contemporary Art (PICA) to host a one day XR Bootcamp for 13 artists and arts managers. The idea was to provide artists, working across multiple forms, the opportunity to gain an insight into the history of XR (VR/AR), current immersive art landscape and production techniques followed by the chance to get hands on with a number of XR technologies and experiences across multiple formats of immersive art. The XR Bootcamp was a pre cursor to another PICA development initiative the PICA XR 3 day Hackathon which was being hosted by Immerse Australia + Natalie Mahrino of Neon Thursday.

The day started with a fascinating presentation from Frame Lab’s Technical Director Gareth Lockett, looking at the history of XR technology, from Victorian era stereograms to the Sword of Damocles VR system of the 1960’s!

This was followed by a presentation overview from Frame Lab’s Creative Director Justin McArdle, looking at XR in the contemporary artworld. This examined the opportunities to exhibit immersive art, as well as case studies and a look at what other artists are currently doing in the space.

After lunch the fun began with lots of hands on demos and experiences including 360 videos, Hololens 2 Augmented Reality and High end VR experiences.

Natalie Mahrino and Gareth Lockett introduce the PICA 3 day XR Hackathon. Built on the principles of the game Hackathons. Three teams of three (an artist is teamed up with a developer and a 3D technical artist) jam together for 72 hours and produce a proof of concept work of immersive art. The results of which will be showcased at the upcoming XRWA festival.
